Business Performance- What Does It Really Mean?
It means different things at different times. It certainly means anticipating and meeting demonstrated customer requirements well enough to generate better than break-even revenue. And of course it means understanding how to control internal and external costs and expenses, to enable an adequate return on equity.
But what about knowing your cash balance--next month's that is, not just last month's. If you're growing or intend to grow, this can be more difficult than it seems--there are several moving targets interacting here. Doing this one right means that you also have a pretty good handle on how big a war chest that new "rapid results initiative" is going to take. Our clients have the tools to get the necessary cash lined up before pulling the trigger.
And what about key performance indicators throughout the marketing and operations environments? Even if management is able to guide the organization by experience and instinct, with little measured feedback, can the same be said for everyone else? Accountability, achievement, and teamwork--they all depend on measuring performance.
At its base, Business Performance means understanding the meaning behind the conventional financial reports and vast data inputs. It means knowing the key performance indicators that must be watched (the ones that should cause alarms to sound automatically when they're not being met), and it means already having decided what to do when the alarm sounds.
